In our more than a decade of experience in designs industry offering gamut of creative services; we fully understand while discussing a project with clients it’s quite challenging for any designer to present or represent overall design tone and mood. In order to have an effective and fruitful discussion around the tone & mood of the design project under discussion we have been working on mood boards which plays an important role in clearly communicating the ideas from our end and at the same time clients are able to provide proper feedback on our inputs. Under this article we intend to share some of the tips we have gathered while working on creative services on behalf of our clients to create the above mentioned mood boards for your next client’s meet.

Under our creative services we define Mood boards as the collection of textures, images, sketches and text material related to design under discussion to represent overall mood of the art work. One point of caution, mood boards are not very easy to create though, it takes patience to search for those most relevant images, pictures, sketches and texts by spending hours on websites, magazines and books, image galleries looking for that perfect image to sum up your intended feel for the work at hand. Our first tip is to not rely solely on digital platforms; we are sure the first thing that would had come to your mind while thinking about mood boards is logging on to Google Images to get that matching image, though Google Images present some good options but we strongly suggest look beyond it your next most relevant inspiration could come from a magazine or a book instead.

Also we recommend undertaking photography as your interest and try to capture as many moods outdoor as possible. When outdoor try to capture any inspiring image you come across like a bird in the sky, an old cycle, typography on the sign board, traditional jewelry or even a brick design on wall idea is not to capture a stunning image but to capture thoughts, feelings, impressions and themes. Our next important tip is to conceptualise your mood board before preparing one. Discard all the irrelevant stuff from your mood board, act like a curator not the collector while preparing the mood board also its important to keep in mind how are you going to present your mood board to your client.

Is it going to be online (via. mailer) or it’s going to be offline physically as the two approach would differ quite a bit in terms of format and presentation. We suggest for any of the formats online or offline important point to remember is that client should not be losing sight of the central theme and the idea we wish to communicate. Also the presentation timing plays a critical role in creative services which includes presenting a mood board, we suggest keep it a surprise for your client rather than sharing the same offline before the presentation so your client would be aware of what you are going to present.
